A healthy home using performance membranes is a tightly sealed, energy-efficient structure that utilizes advanced, vapor-permeable materials to actively manage moisture, eliminate drafts, and prevent toxic mold growth. These intelligent membranes balance airtightness with breathability, ensuring superior indoor air quality and structural longevity.

Using a performance membrane helps promote a healthier home by controlling moisture where it belongs and improving the overall air quality inside.

It acts as a barrier in the walls and roof system to stop water vapour ingress and reduce the chance of hidden dampness—because when moisture can’t get in, you dramatically lower the risk of mould growth and musty odours. Performance membranes also support better airtightness, which means less uncontrolled air leakage and fewer drafts, while still allowing the building to “breathe” in a controlled way. Key Components of a Performance Membrane System

Performance membranes create an active "breathing" envelope for the house. The system typically consists of two distinct types of membranes:

  • Vapor-Permeable Wall Underlays (Exterior): Installed on the outside of the frame, these act as a secondary weather barrier. They block exterior wind and rain while allowing moisture vapor from inside the wall cavity to escape, keeping timber framing dry and preventing wood rot. 
  • Intelligent Air & Vapor Barriers (Interior): Installed on the interior of the wall studs, these airtight layers prevent conditioned air from leaking out. Advanced "smart" membranes dynamically change their permeability based on humidity—tightening up in winter to block vapor, and opening up in summer to allow walls to dry out.
